Abstract

The area under Banana in Kolhapur district is increasing day by day due to congenial good soil and climatic condition for banana cultivation and more water availability of banana. The present study is undertaken with following specific objectives. The data was collected for the year 2012-13. The ACGR for area, production and productivity of banana in the Kolhapur district for the period from 2003-04 to 2012-13 were estimated to 7.72, 6.08 and -1.29 per cent per annum, respectively. At the overall level, the per hectare use of human labour and manure were 249.82 man days and 261.17 qtls., respectively. The per hectare cost of cultivation was Rs. 2,72,876.10. The major items of cost were rental value of owned land (34.39 %), seedlings (17.42 %) and human labour (9.18 %), and interest on fixed capital (0.21 %).The percentage of cost A and cost B in the total cost of cultivation were 63.10 and 97.71 per cent, respectively. The benefit cost ratio was 2.07 indicating profitability of crop.

Abstract

Rabi potato cultivation is getting increasingly popular among farmers. In this context, the present investigation was carried out to study the production and marketing of Rabi potato in Pune district. The major production problems faced by the cultivators in production were non-availability of quality tubers in time at low rates, high fertilizer cost and wage rates, non-availability of loan facility in time and in marketing major difficulties expressed by farmers were price variation, high commission rate, high transport cost etc. The non-availability of loans at cheap rate at the time of sowing was the major problem as reported by 54.17 per cent of the farmers. Good crop output cannot be expected without sowing good quality seed. About 73.00 per cent of farmers complained that despite their best efforts they are not able to procure good quality seed. High seed price was also a common complaint reported by 65 per cent of farmers. Another major problem was high wage rates, about 60 per cent of farmers complained about it. The transportation was a major bottle neck in efficient marketing of potatoes. About 70 per cent farmers complained that transportation charges were high. The price variation emerged as an important problems as 66.37 per cent farmers complained about it. About 63.00 per cent farmers faced the problems of high commission charges.

Abstract

Pigeonpea plays an important role in mixed and inter-cropping and maintaining soil fertility. Maharashtra is major area of pigeonpea and in top five pulses producing states in India. This study covers the changes in area, production and productivity and acreage response of pigeonpea during pre and post Technology Mission on Pulses. Region wise and district level secondary data were used. The study period was divided into period-I (Pre TMOP) from 1969-70 to 1990-91, period-II (post TMOP) from 1991-92 to 2012-13 and period-III from 1969-70 to 2012-13 (entire period). The result showed that production of pigeonpea has been tripled in Maharashtra during the period 44 year and showed increasing trend, As regards the area of pigeonpea, it had increased by 258.46 per cent during the period of 44 years since 1969. The productivity of pigeonpea has shown increasing trend in Maharashtra. The production increase was brought about by both area expansion and productivity improvement. The significant increase in growth rate of the acreage, production and productivity of pigeonpea was noticed at the state level during the period from 1969 to 2013. During pre-TMOP period, the area, production and productivity of pigeonpea were significant and increased at the rate of 2.21, 3.74 and 1.49 per cent per annum, respectively in the state and significantly highest increase in growth rate of production of pigeonpea was noticed in Marathwada (4.72) regions, while in post- TMOP period the area, production and productivity of pigeonpea was significant and increased at the rate of 0.77, 3.01 and 2.21 per cent per annum respectively at state level. The factor such as lagged price and lagged acreage of pigeonpea, pre sowing period rainfall, current acreage of cotton was observed to play a major vital role in influencing pigeonpea acreage.
